Iconic Design, The Paulistano Chair

Recent recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is one of Brazil’s most daring and renowned architects. In 2006, he received architecture’s highest international honour and was awarded The Pritzker Architecture Prize.

In their decision the jury noted his “deep understanding of the poetics of space." This quote captures an essential truth about the distinction between (merely) good and (truly) great design. Great design is thoughtful, meticulous, and innovative. Most importantly, though, great design enables and encourages continual development. Great design helps you live the experience of your space more fully .

One of Paulo Mendes de Rocha’s most recognisable and visually poetic design pieces is the Paulistano Armchair. Created in 1957, during the height of the mid-century modern design era, the Paulistano Armchair is truly an iconic piece of art and design. Mendes da Rocha’s chair is a magnificent achievement in technical perfection, visual precision and bold, imaginative design.

The chair was originally created for the living rooms of São Paulo’s Paulistano Athletic Club, which is considered an early masterpiece of Paulo Mendes de Rocha’s architectural work. Since its introduction nearly 60 years ago the Paulistano lounge chair has become an unmatched and venerated classic that is included in the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The Paulistano Armchair is an archetypal modernist object whose audacious brilliance stems directly from Paulo Mendes de Rocha’s deceptively unassuming design. The chair’s frame is actually a continuous 17 foot (5.18 metre) long piece of phosphatized carbon steel that is cleverly welded in a single spot.

The carbon steel frame is then stylishly wrapped with a canvas of 100% cotton that comes in a variety of vibrant colours. The canvas sling can be adjusted slightly up or down the frame to accommodate an upright or relaxed sitting preference. The chair’s elegant, constructivist concept deliberately challenges the limits of its structural form, yet remains an object of exceptional comfort and superb design.

Stylodeco is proud to offer the outdoor version of Paulo Mendes de Rocha’s Paulistano Armchair. It is an exquisite piece of art that will immediately distinguish any room. With its durable frame and canvas cover this chair is easily adaptable to both indoor and outdoor living spaces. The chair’s mid-century modern aesthetic is clean, uncomplicated and timelessly sophisticated.

The Paulistano Armchair is a design masterpiece that will elevate your living space to poetic greatness.
