Choosing the right tableware is a large contributor to making your table a feast for the eyes. But what are the latest trends? What plates should you choose? Follow me as I talk about some stylish colours and materials below.
Start setting your table by placing a table cloth, or use placemats instead if you’re aiming for a more casual look and feel. Then, you can place in this order: dinner plates (and starter plates/bowls if you are serving a starter), cutlery, glasses and napkins. Only after that should you start decorating your dining table with flowers and candle holders.
When it comes to tableware, minimalism is the current trend. Put your multicoloured and chintzy glasses and plates back into your drawers! Streamline tableware, without any sparkle or glitter, brings cool elegance to the dining table with its delicate and straight lines.
Established Scandinavian brands like Bloomingville and House Doctor have come out with ranges of minimalistic tableware this season. These include hand painted dinner and dessert plates made of ceramic. The tones used are generally shades of grey and marsala (Pantone colour of the year 2015), resulting in a beautiful collection of blush pink and light grey plates. These plates have a very short edge (3 to 5mm) and look as if they are completely flat, adding to the minimalist look and feel.
Bloomingville has recently launched these ceramic cups* in unique color combinations of pastels and dark colours, as well as of interesting surface textures. The new Holly tableware collection* -whose trademark are their crosses,- is just perfect for summer!
At Broste Copenhagen, another Danish brand for the home, the minimalism lies in their Japanese art influenced dinner and dessert plates. The brand has created a whole collection (called ‘Skagen String’) which means you can match the plates with bowls and mugs.
To conclude, choose ceramics over porcelain, pastels over bright colours, and minimalism over an overloaded table setting. With summer around the corner, I’m sure you’ll have many occasions to style your table for, and these tips should make that an enjoyable experience!
